For B.J. and Nicole’s Clubhouse Wedding in Solana Beach the focus was on creating a great experience for their guests. While sometimes a great experience is seen as creating a very elaborate day with tons of events, their version of a great experience was keeping things simple, keeping their guests comfortable and actually spending time with them.
We started off at Nicole’s mom’s house for prep photos. I like when this happens because the background during those photos is more special to them. As I was photographing the prep details her mom got excited about me using the decor to hang the dress and place the shoes on. No matter where a bride is getting ready, my goal is to create beautiful photos with whatever backgrounds I’m given. With nice house decor, this was not hard this time around.
For their wedding location they chose a clubhouse with an ocean view. It was a great location because they were able to keep everything in one spot. The ceremony was on the lawn facing the ocean, dinner was in a tent around the side of the clubhouse and for dancing guests went in to the clubhouse. They even made things easier by providing a shuttle that brought guests from the hotel to the venue and took them back when the celebration was over. I always feel that the biggest part of making a great experience is making it as simple as possible for guests to relax and be worry free. They did a great job in creating that experience.
I got to admit that when we did our final meeting about their wedding I was a little surprised about them not wanting to go down to the beach to do some photos. I’ve had so many couples tell me in the past that they hired me just because they loved my landscape photos. Nicole told me that they did not want to leave the venue to do photos, even though we were only 3 minutes from the beach. Instead of pushing for us to go somewhere else for photos I assured her that no matter what she wants to do we can create some awesome photos. I did a site visit a couple of days before the wedding day to see how the light would be and what I would be working with just so that I could start thinking about my options. On the day of the wedding everything went according to plan and we got some fun photos.
I think that the one of thee biggest things that has an affect on any portrait is the subjects trust in the photographer. I completely felt that trust with Nicole and B.J. when they stood in front of my camera. The result was some awesome portraits that show off their personality.
