Every now and then we are presented with an opportunity that takes us out of our comfort zone. A few weeks ago I had a job that took me to Phoenix. I don’t go to Arizona often, and since Jennie and Christina live two hours away in Tucson we decided to set up an engagement session.
There were a few challenges. The first was that my schedule would have me arriving after dark and our two options were to shoot that night or in the morning. Since their work schedules would not allow for a morning shoot we decided to shoot in the dark. The second challenge was that I had not been to Tucson and as much as I tried to research online, it was really hard to find photos of what places looked like at night. I let them pick the location and hoped for the best when I arrived.
We did their night time engagement session at a shopping mall in their neighborhood and it all worked out great. Mainly due to them being great sports. With engagement sessions, we typically start with easy shooting situations. This allows me to work with couples and get them to start being comfortable in front of the camera. The easy shooting setups allow me to focus on them and not on my camera settings or playing around with lights. By the time we get to sunset or night photos, and I’m playing around with lights, they have already warmed up to the idea of being in front of the camera. With Jennie and Christina, we jumped straight to me playing around with lights but it all worked because they focused on each other and made themselves comfortable in front of the camera right away.
I’m happy that we did this shoot. I was a little nervous doing an engagement session all in the dark but with Jennie and Christina’s help we made it work. Sometimes it’s good to get out of your comfort zone and try something challenging.
