Crossfit Gym Photography
One of my favorite things to do is a good workout. Crossfit is probably one of the best workout styles that I have tried. This is one of the reasons that it was a fun to do some Crossfit Gym Photography for Victory MMA.
The exercises require a combination of strength and coordination that can sometimes be subtle. For the shoot, I differed to the professionals and asked them what they wanted to show off. They told me which exercises they wanted to do and key parts of the movement. I asked them about technique and range of motions to set up the shots.
Once I had a good idea of the movements, I rearranged the lighting setups to capture the right angles. With dynamic movements, it’s especially important to plan out the shots to get the right angles and ratios of lights. For the lighting setups, I went with lights that are a bit edgier and harsh. I felt that a gritty feeling light would be complementary to the toughness of these athletes. Light with strong contrast also shows off muscles very well.
Once everything is setup just right I can let them display their skills and capture them in movement. The athletes moved through different exercises, each one more impressive than the last. They did a great job of displaying some skills and were very easy to work with. Their willingness to slow things down so that I could understand their sport and get things just right really added to the finished product.
